…I’m a huge Walkmen fan.  Have been since the first album.  Nice to see them return to form a bit with their much darker and moodier new album You & Me.  I try not to outright pimp too many records here, but it’s really a good listen if your looking for something new.  After the last album I remember them stating in an interview that they wanted to bring more of a 50s r&b feel to the next album(this one).  I don’t know if I get that, but I definitely get a more heavy and ambianced feel that is maybe consistent with some of the more adventurous arrangers of the 50s(see below) who dabbled in darker more exotic qualities in their arrangements.

On the Water by the Walkmen

Blue Sands by the Chico Hamilton Quintet – if I had to pick a 50s reference point for the Walkmen song above I would say this is the jazz equivalent.  There was all kinds of moody jazz arrangements at the time.  Actually Fred Katz(cello) of one of the earlier Chico Hamilton lineups went on to do TV & movie soundtracks(try and find his soundtrack to the movie “The”) later in his career.
